You know how awful it feels when something is in your eye. Or worse yet, wedged between your eye and your contact lens? How fast do you remove the offending particle or hair?
OK, let’s try an experiment. Next time that happens, don’t do a thing. Live with the irritation—hour after hour, day by day…year after year.
Not a chance, you say?
Well, that’s how it feels to your cat or dog when s/he has chronic eye conditions such as entropian, and ectropian.
Entropian occurs when part of all of the edge of an eyelid turns inward toward the eye so eyelashes are constantly irritating the cornea. Corneal ulceration or perforation, etc. may occur.
Ectropian occurs when the eyelid edge turns outward, exposing the delicate membrane that lines the inside of the eyelid to damage and poor tear distribution becomes an irritant, too.
Either condition is very uncomfortable, but our four-legged friends adapt to the discomfort and go on.
But over time the constant irritation takes its toll. For example, an entropian can cause your pet to change the way s/he holds her/his head to try to avoid any pain. That doesn’t work unfortunately and vision is definitely affected, and interestingly, so is the pet’s confidence and attitude.
